I have not been able to upgrade my account since June, and it is just not meeting my needs. The new journal is located here. I have also changed my sites name to "Lust for Life - not for food" since the Looking Glass thing was getting to be old hat. I have also revamped my site to match the blog, so if you get a chance, check it out.

Hope everyone had a great Thanksgiving!

Sick Again!

I am sick again. I went to the Milwaukee Christmas Parade on Satruday with my Dad and Jamie, and I started getting a sore thoat in the morning, and then we went to the Holiday Folk Fair, and I wasn't feeling hot then. Sunday I was feeling pretty ok, just a touch of a cold, and now today, it is a full blown cold. At least Jamie had it for one day last week and he seems to be feeling fine. Anyhow, we all had a really great time and I didn't eat too bad at the Folk Fair. I did have a piece of Marzipan cake, but the piece wasn't all that huge. It was so delicious, it wasn't even funny. <grin>

I'm pretty stressed. My Grandma had a stroke last Tuesday and after the CAT scan came back, it seems it was a mild stroke. My Mom spent the weekend up there helping out, and when she came back, she said that Grandma wasn't doing good, and that she doesn't think Grandma is going to be around for long. She is also recovering form Pneumonia so this recovery period will more than likely last longer than usual for her. I just hope and pray my Mom is wrong.

New Leaf in Looking Glass Land

This entire fall season so far, has been one big train wreck for me. Yes, I am still attempting to lose weight. Yes, I do manage, by the skin of me teeth, to keep the weight off, but I continue to bounce between two to three pounds each month. (As in up a pound, down two pounds, up three pounds, down thee pounds.) It is very frustrating, and I really do want to lose weight.

I have a motivation problem, (Like that wasn't obvious for the past year) and find that my one year anniversary with losing weight has come (and sadly gone) with out nary a glance from me. I think with the holidays coming up, that I really need to buckle down and get serious. I've been reading One Fat BitchyPoo and she and her husband have lost a combined 300 lbs and they are so motivated. If you get a chance, check her site out. (I am thinking of buying Fred's book and checking it out.) Way to go Robyn and Fred!

Last week I lost 3.5 pounds, and I know this week I ate terrible, so hopefully it all didn't pack back on. We'll see on Tuesday Night.

Thank you to Ashley in Kentucky for leaving a comment in my guest book. I had really been considering deleting my site and blog since I felt it was non-productive and not helping. Your positive comments really changed my mind and motivated me this morning. Thank you thank you! For a while I was feeling so alone out there, and just kind of blowing in the wind, but I can see that I'm not! Thank you!

CRAP

Somehow, I lost my nice template with blogger. How tight you ask? Well, we literally had $20 for basic grocerys (milk, bread, cheese slices) and gas so Steve could get to work.

Unfortunately, that meant no fresh produce, no nice low fat ingredients/entree's. We essentially lived on Ramen noodles, Kraft dinner and grilled cheese sandwiches. I managed for the better part of the week to stay away from the Peanutbutter, but I did break down on Saturday as I was craving it's nutty sweet goodness. (I really think my body was craving protein and I buckled under the pressuer.)

It sure does suck to think about seeing a gain after my nice loss last week. Sure, I could have starved my self all week long, but I was ready to eat my feet and I gave in and ate what Steve and Jamie ate.

On that note, I will leave you. Tonight I have weigh in, so wish me luck!

Happy Tuesday

I spent a miserable week sick last week, and finally felt better Sunday. (Yes, Sunday.)

The great part of having a sore throat from hell, is that I wasn't into food all that much. It was pretty easy to stick to water and other liquids. (Broth, sugar free Jell-o etc.)

Hece my 3.5 pound loss. Yes, you heard correct. 3.5 pounds. I'm down to 191.5 lbs. Makes me pretty happy, and also makes me want more and more like that. My Aunt and Ellen also lost really nice amounts this past week as well. I think Ellen lost 3 lbs and Aunt Mary lost like a whopping 5lbs. She is on FIRE! Serriously. WTG ANTM!

So after weighing in, we did 15 minutes of WATP and then 20 minutes switching around on the exercise machines in my Aun't s basement. I did 150 crunches on a reverse ab roller thing. Ugh. And then walked/jogged gently on the treadmill for about 10 minutes. I was feeling pretty great.

Well, this weekend should be fun as well. My nieghbor Pam, her boyfriend is a "Red Foot Hasher" (no, not marajuana but a running club) and they are hosting this months hash. (Running and beer. GREAT combination.) So I am going to run a leg or two of the hash with them, and then head back to the house to help Pam set up the food etc. Jamie is also going overnight to my parents house, so things should be pretty fun. I've never run a hash and I understand that the "virgin" of the run gets a bit of ribbing etc. I don't mind, as long as I'm not forced to do any power drinking.

Anyhow, keep on losing! Life is great this week!

The Common Cold

The baby that I'm watching this week is sick, he also gave his cold to Jamie and I. I cannot begin to tell you how much this bites.

I tried telling my friend (the Mom) on Tuesday that he was sick and she was convinced he was teething. (What do I know, I only have a three year old.) She is sick now too, and appologized, but still brought him over this morning. If we didn't need the money so bad, I would have told her that I couldn't take him until he was better. It really didn't matter if he came today since Jamie and I already are sick, but it was the principle of the thing, and the fact that he was miserable and so were we.

I can only say thank goodness for Nyquill.

I'm off. Finally over.

Well, the great stressor in my life is finally over with! The wedding was two weekends ago. It was a really great time, and the dress looked really great once I had it fitted etc. I was so worked up for NOTHING. It was quite the two weeks with the bachelorette party, rehearsal, wedding and day after/opening presents, so I took the week off from the internet to just catch my breath and regroup.

It is almost my one year anniversary of joining Weight Watchers. September 5th to be exact. I'm kind of disappointed in my progress, but at least I lost something. (And something is better than nothing in my book.) I officially lost 20 pounds in a year. Gah! I did gain the past two months, (stress eating) and really let my self go after the wedding, but I am now back on track and ready to go!

I went to go and join Weight Watchers officially on Sunday and they weren't open unlike the sign said they would be. I was pretty disappointed since I really needed a weight watchers "fix" and wasn't able to get it. Instead I went to my Aunt Mary's and we (A. Mary, A. Kris, Ellen and I) weighed in and started our brand spanking new challenge. Essentially we put $2 in the pot every week, and if we gain, every half pound costs $0.50. After I think 4 or 6 weeks, who ever has lost the most weight gets the pot. They worked it out and it would be $48 and it would have to be spent on something to do with weight loss whether it is new clothes, or exercise stuff or books about nutrition/cooking. We are pretty excited.

My Aunt Mary also explained the new points system and showed me the new material. Pretty easy. My new magic number is 24. Yay! Anyhow, it sounds pretty straight forward. She is doing great by the way with her weight watchers. She is losing like crazy. Steve couldn't believe how great she looked at the wedding and mentioned it to me the minute I got home. I am also doing the Al's Memorial Run/Walk with them (A. Mary/U. Sam) and A. Kris and her two boys. I don't know who all else is going, but it should be great and it supports Children's Hospital. Uncle Sam and my cousin Kurt will be running it (5 miles) and us girls and Keith are walking it. I don't know if we are going the 3 mile or 5 mile course or what. It should be very interesting and fun.

Well I'm off. School started this week and the kids will be here in an hour and I am also watching my friend's 10 month old baby for the next couple of weeks. Let me tell you, things are wild around here. <grin> Take care and keep on losing!

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://lookingglassland.blogspot.com/2003_09_01_archive.html#106258727877999227' title='Whew! He has stick straight hair, and it is very thick, so as it grows, he tends to get a little "mop-top" if we don't keep on top of things. So I buzzed his hair since it looked so nice last time I cut it.

And...

I used the wrong clipper guard and cut it way too short. How short, you ask? "Son, you're in the Army now." short. He wasn't too thrilled to have it done, but it looks so funny sticking out every wich way in a very endearing Nick Cage kind of way when we let it get long. It was getting out of hand, and it was time to chop!

I had frozen custard last night too. I'm so bad, but I haven't had ice cream of any sort in so very long. I can't even remember the last time I had Le Duc's. I've been so good on that front (the sweet front) and I decided a little treat wouldn't hurt. I just need to exercise today. I hope to be getting the tires today for my bike! Yay!

My Dad absolutely loves LeDuc's and won't eat frozen custard anywhere else. Jamie's first taste of ice cream at 4 months old was from LeDuc's. They (My parents) have been going there since I was a very young child. I remember taking a bath after dinner etc. and then getting into our PJ's and at dusk we would drive the 20 minutes to Wales and get frozen custard and eat sitting outside on this bench that rings a tree. The bench and tree is still there and it is Jamie's favorite place to sit.

We have new-ish neighbors on the other side of Pam. The family moved in last summer and neither Pam nor I have had much to do with them. The parent's got off on the wrong foot right away by making some rude comment to Pam when she introduced herself to them, and I just got glares every time I would wave as I walked by on my walks with Jamie. So, we just ignore them and they ignore us. Recently, the Mom has been making overtures to Pam, so hopefully things could lighten up and we all could be friends. (laughs - too Brady huh?)

They have two kids, that are similar in age to Marlena and Ethan, so they play quite a bit together. The kids are VERY friendly and very polite, which is a great combination in our book. Well, all 4 of the kids wandered over on Tuesday night, and mind you, I have spoken maybe 20 words to both of the kids in the past year so far since they usually don't play over here, and both kids were jumping with excitement and blurted out:

"Our Mom is going to have a baby!" Oh good Lord! My mouth fell open and I just blinked a few times. She is easily in her 40's and the her youngest is 8 years old. I'll just bet she would be thrilled to know the kids were blabbing that around especially to us. You couldn't shut the kids up to save their lives. It just opened up some sort of dam and they blabbed their family secrets for about 15 minutes, and then all 5 kids practiced casting with Jamie's little fishing pole for about an hour. (No hooks, but a rubber weight so the kids can get the feel of the pole.)

Neighborhood gossip. Ha! At least our hedges are trimmed now so we don't have the tattle tale patrole (block watch captian) on our butts. The lady up the block, who has dedided that she and I are going to be grand friends, is the block watch captian. She doesn't hesitate to comment on our un-shoveled sidewalks the morning after a snowfall, even though you have 24 hours to get it off the walk-ways. She is starting a new block watch, and wants me to do all these things like speak to everyone and I am not touching it with a 10 foot pole. I'm with Pam. We watch each other's homes, we know what is going on, and that is all we need.

I spied these at K-Mart yesterday and tried them out. Slim-Fast now has "Hot Meal Options" out on the market. (They don't have them listed on their site, so I couldn't post a pic of them.) They are "Just add water" dry packets that you microwave. The size of the cooked product is on the "smallish" size, but I added about three cups of steamed zucchini and it was a marvelously huge meal. They are 4 points per packet and are pretty good. I bought the Fettuccine Alfredo, but there is Macaroni and Cheese and also a Marinara one.

I updated my full web site to match this blogger template. I have heard from several people that the old sunset graphic at the main page was taking too long to download, so I got rid of it. Check it out if you get some time.

I can't wait to get the bikes fixed. I need Steve's help, but it has been been so very busy the past couple of days that it has been impossible to get much of anything done. The rest of the week is open for us, but the weekend is packed full! Saturday morning we are going to Maxwell Street Days, a huge open air flea market, Saturday evening is the cook out and then wild night out on the town for my cousins bachelorette party. And then Irish Fest on Sunday. Whew! Busy!

Anyhow, I spoke with a couple that I saw at the farmers market on Sunday about how they like their kiddy cart. They said it was the greatest thing on the market and that I would never use my car again. (Ha! I was in Madison, the liberal hippie hot spot of Wisconsin.) The woman was 9 months pregnant and she said that she uses it all the time and the husband said it was a great cardio work out since you are pulling an additional 30-50 pounds behind you. It actually has storage behind the kiddy seat that can be accessed from behind for bags (like groceries) and back-packs. Pretty awesome!

I understand that there will be a "pizza delivery guy" stripper arriving some time during the cook out, so my cousin should be mortified. My cousin wasn't all that keen on the idea, but maid of honor insisted. (She also had the guts to ask me for a "contribution" even after I voted against the stripper. To save face I will give $5 but that is it.) Call me a prude, but I don't get kicks from some strange guy waving his crotch in someone else's face, or my face for that matter. Don't get me wrong, I appreciate male beauty, just not gyrating buns in my face!

Take care all and OP all the way!

Chubb Wiff

Today we recieved our $400 child tax relief check. I can absolutely say that it could not have come at a better time. We are pretty broke, and I was able to grocery shop and pay some bills. Wa-hoo!

Unfortunately, Steve decided to splurge and buy some smoked fish (chubbs.) I prefer smoked salmon, but he has this thing about chubbs lately. They are a rather greasy, stinky smoked fish, and it is not boned and rather small, so it is more work than it is worth. Boy, can they stink up a house fast. The cat just doesn't know where to sniff first. Steve likes them, so I don't complain. But I eat lox every chance I can get.

Jamie has some sort of cold/allergies that is producing copious amounts of snot. He isn't acting like he has a cold, and Steve has been calling it allergies. Ugh. Snot in August. Can't beat it. I just pray I don't get it and then infect my cousin just in time for her wedding. I'll just have to wait and see if I get it. CRAP!

What a Weekend!

On Friday, my friend Jessica's Dad gave me a bike and also one of those tow behind kiddy carts. I don't know what to call them, but they are great. I can't wait to get new tires on the bike and the cart. I am so very excited and hope that this means a break in my plateau. We live right on the Oak Leaf Trail which is 90+ miles of connected bike/walking paths throughout Milwaukee county. I can't begin to tell you how very excited I am. Thank you Jessica!

On Saturday, Jamie, Michelle, Aunt Kathy and I all went to a huge farmers market in Madison, Wisconsin. It was a really great market, which rings the capitol building and featured really GREAT produce and other wares. We met Steve's cousin Jennifer who lives in Madison there and it was so much fun to spend time with everyone. Jamie had a blast and was very attracted to Jennifer. She hadn't seen Jamie since he was a baby, so it was a lot of fun for both of them.

The great part of farmers markets is that most of the food is pretty good for you. That is if you manage to avoid the bakery/candy stalls. (Which I mostly did.) I bought cherries, patty pan squash, Thai egg plant, a salsa verde kit and mushrooms. I'm pretty adventurous, and I have never had the squash or that type of egg plant before, and man oh man, I am so sad I have been missing out on the patty pans until now!

We ended up having lunch at Noodles and Company, which was NOT great for the points, but what can a body do? It was actually very good, a very guilty good.

Back on track this week, and OP to everyone!

So I officially LOVE Aveda. I can truthfully say that today rocked! I have never had anything done to my face/body before, and it was so great! The whole thing took about 1 1/2 hours. I could easily become addicted to getting things done. My Mom suggested going to the local beauty school and getting things done and I have been spoiled forever. I told her Aveda or nothing. She laughed, but hey, it's maybe a once a year treat, so why not get it done right?

I am totally pumped about the way my eye brows look too. I have never really plucked them, but they look so much more nice and neat. Steve was calling them girly brows. Why shouldn't I have nice looking brows? I don't need to have manly brows. It's not like I had a uni-brow or anything, but it is kind of amazing to me how different they look.

Well, I am one tired girl. Whew! Getting Jamie up at 5:15 am is not a treat I am looking forward to tomorrow. He gets so crabby around lunch time. We are going swimming at the in-laws, so that at least should be fun. I hope to get a bunch of laps in so I hope for no rain!

I've been making poor food choices the last two days, but things are not spinning madly out of control. Yet. (Ha!)

I made ribs and sauerkraut for Steve's birthday diiner - I tried to talk him into something more light, but he insisted. It is hard to argue with the birthday boy. He was pleased with the whole dinner, and I was pleased that it turned out well. Jamie, however was heart broken when it was time for bed. He thought last night was some grand sleep-over with Michelle. He was all ready to sleep with her on her inflata-bed, but us girls had movies to watch. He also got up at 5:45 am which I can probably blame on Steve, but the excitement of having Michelle over was probably the culprit.

Well, I am off for a shower. Today is Aveda day and tomorow is swimming with the neighbor kids at my in-laws pool, and then Saturday Jamie, Michelle and I are going to a huge farmer's market in Madison. What I really need is some time to sleep, but I don't think I am going to get that until Sunday morning. <laughs>

Oh, and I got the dress fitted Tuesday evening, and it looks a lot better with it pinned in place. I have been kind of down about how dumpy I looked, but it is kind of amazing how different a dress looks fitted. I go next tuesday again to get the length taken off. Yay!

Take care all and keep on losing!

We had a pretty good weekend. Jamie and I went to a farmer's market in Brookfield and bought three pounds of green beans and some Kholorabi (is that how you spell it?) and then spent some time at my parent's house. On Sunday, we all went to Steve's parents house for swimming and a light lunch.

I have to say, that I am pretty pleased with swimming 12+ laps. I could have done much more, but Jamie thought my swimming laps was a game called "Shark!" and I guess I was supposed to get him or something, so I probably did more swimming than I thought. He paddled around with us in swimming wings and an innertube. He had a lot of fun, but tells everyone that he doesn't swim very well. We keep on telling him that he will be able to swim much better as he gets practice, but he is rather skeptical.

Tonight I have my first fitting for the bridesmaids dress. Ugh! So that means that I am going to be missing my Aunt's Tuesday exercise night. I was really looking forward to it too. I'll just have to take an extra long walk this afternoon.

Tomorrow is Steve's birthday. I don't have a clue as to what to get him. Jamie is pretty excited about the whole thing, but we still don't have a gift for him. Steve's sister is coming for dinner and then staying over-night since she is treating me to a facial (at Aveda) as a late birthday present on Thursday morning.

Take care, and keep on losing!

Weigh In

Last night was quite the pleasant surprise. I went to my Aunt's house for our weigh in / exercise night. I lost 3.5 pounds. I did a fancy "Wendie" plan this last week which consisited of eating a half of Schwanns pizza late Saturday night whilst watching "Young Frankenstien" with Steve. Just the super high day mid week and then low and high days scattered about. It really did shake my metabolism up, and gave me great motivation.

We walked for a good half hour (If not more...I really don't know.) but I kept up with my Aunt Mary who was walking at a faster clip. It really got my heart pumping and my legs going. I really need to watch it with the walking/wearing crappy shoes. I got a blister on the bottom of my foot. It is feeling better this morning, but was pretty painful. We all went for SubWay after, and that is always good. Mmmmmm SubWay.

I've got my mother in law hooked on Dotti's web site. I had shown her the print out I had made of Panera last week and she was so impressed that she had hit the site and was using the restaraunt to guide her in her food choices. Very cool. <grin>

Well, I'm off back to bed. Just wanted to blog a bit since I had 20 minutes until I had to get Steve up for work. I have walked at least 4 times this week, which is better than I have done in the past couple of months. Whew! I am bound and determined to see a loss tomorow at my Aunt's house. I WILL see a loss. (I'm a firm believer in positive thinking.)

I went over the bachelorette/wedding plans with Steve yesterday. No children are invited, so I have to find a sitter for Jamie from fron noon to preferably overnight. Steve's Mom was willing to come here and then leave at Midnight, but that is too late for her to be driving 45 minutes home. My neighbor does owe me two overnights, but Jamie is such a squirrel in the mornings, I really wouldn't wish him upon them, but we'll see.

I'm off, I must make my morning coffee.

I have this on my fridge door at eye level. Steve's cousin Kelly came with me when I ran over to Marshall Fields. She is 14 and just recently "has become a woman" so all of a sudden she is much more mature and does more grown up things. She is such a nice girl and I'm really glad I am getting a chance to do things with her and her sister. She volunteered to come with me when I said I had to hit ladies intimates for the bra. I think she thought I was getting a sleek, Victoria Secret's bra, but au contraire!

I think that all 14 year olds think that everyone wears the really cute, little strapped bras that come in a rainbow of colors. She was slack jawed when she saw my "contraption" as I laughingly called it. She said to me in complete amazement "You are going to wear that?" I said "Honey, this is what you have to wear when you are fat and you don't want to look as fat in a dress." She was completely floored and I just laughed.

I did walk 1.5 + miles before eating at the mall. The girls were so helpful. They adore Jamie and love to take him for walks in the mall to see the different things, and also to ride the elevator. I also ate Panera's "Ginger Tomato Florentine" soup and OMG - it was THE best soup that I have ever had. I'm not big on ginger, but truthfully, I couldn't even taste it. It was 1.5 points for a 8 oz cup! It was truly the most delicious soup in the whole world.

Well, today is a new day and I am going to go for a walk with Jamie soon! Take care and keep on losing!

I had a nice night last night at my Aunt Mary's house. We walked for a half hour at a decent clip with Jamie in tow. Just getting out and walking did me a world of good. I really enjoy doing things with my Aunt and Uncle. (This is my Auntie that is doing Weight Watchers too.)

I am going to be joining their very own weight loss group that both my Aunt's and their friend Ellen do on Tuesday evenings. I forsee not being able to pay for weigh watchers for probably the rest of the summer. They weigh in and then do some sort of exercise. I am pretty excited about it.

So I weighed in and just about had a crying jag on my Aunt's bathroom floor. Her scale, which is pretty accurate to WW'ers scales, says I weigh 190.5. OMG! I have been using Pam's scale and it reads 6 lbs lighter. So, that obviously got my buns in gear yesterday. I plan on walking at the mall today before I eat with my In-Laws. (Every other Wed. I join my MIL, Steve's Aunt Kathy, and Grandma at Mayfair mall, which kicks butt over the other mall that we usually have lunch at. ) I get quite the kick out of Kathy and it is nice seeing her more than two times a year.) So I definately have my wind back with WW'ers.

I almost, almost almost made a Taco Bell run on the way home, but ended up eating some super yummy raspberrys that we picked at my Auntie's house for dinner instead. I also lost/had my cell phone stolen so I was stressed out to the max last night. I completely lost my appetite right then and there. We are in the process of getting rid of our land line and using the cell phone as our primary phone, (so we don't have two bills) so we are SOL!! Our neighbor offered to lend us her cell, but I felt really funny about doing that. We can survive until we figure out something. I tore the house apart last night looking for the phone but no dice. I have never ever even misplaced the phone, so I am really concerned. We alerted the cell company last night and got a hold put on the account so we are not responsible for charges in case it was stolen, but it can be reversed if and when I find the phone.

Obviously my Mom is freaked out that she can't call me, but I told her that she can call Pam or our other neighbor and gave her their numbers. I also told her that she can have ANTM e-mail me at any time. Ugh, what a mess!

Well, I will keep you posted. Things are interesting to say the least.

So my weight loss has been on a bit of a plateau the past...what....6 months? I am pretty down about it all. I think that my major problem is motivation, and lack of exercise. I haven't been exercising like I should, and boy, it shows. I have been absolutely foaming at the mouth to get a bike. We have been broke for some time and hopefully I can get one soon. (Someday)

I think I am going through an anti-weight watchers phase and it needs to stop! I don't feel good about my self anymore and I'm not happy to be here in my body again. I spent some time this morning (Thank goodness for the disney channel) perusing the various weigh loss sites. And not all the tried and true ones that I have already seen. New ones.

I feel better about the whole thing right now, but I just need to get in gear!!

I weighed my self this morning at Pam's house. Walking walking. Cleaned the house. I have also bee eating at the mega low end of my points, in hopes that I can start getting some weight off. I am actually eating in the next bracket lower. I promised Jamie and the neighbor kids that the next time I would watch them, that we could either A) go to the zoo or B) go swimming at my in-laws. Unfortunately, my in-laws pool isn't open for the season yet due to the pump mechanism thingie is broken.

I've started a new photo blog over on Xanga. You can visit my site at www.xanga.com/eyespy I'm kind of excited.

I hope to walk at least 3 miles at the zoo. I know for a fact that Jamie will refuse to ride in the wagon, so I'm not even bringing it. The last two times we went I dragged the darn thing all over the place just for him to refuse to ride it. I only put on 4 lbs since June 10th. Much better than I expected. I have been putting it off and putting it off, and today I decided that enough was enough. I knew I gained. I just didn't know how much. So I am sitting at 184 lbs which is no big deal. I can go downward from there. I was actually relieved to see a minor gain, instead of seeing 190 lbs or something, which is exactly what I expected. I'm feeling much better about weight watchers this week. Whew!

Friday Five - a little late

1. What were your favorite childhood stories? "The Jungle Book/Rikki Tikki Tavi" by Rudyard Kippling, "Little Women" by Louisa May Alcott and "Alice in Wonderland/Through the Looking Glass" by Lewis Carroll and any Laura Ingalls Wilder books.

2. What books from your childhood would you like to share with [your] children? There are so many books that both my husband and I have enjoyed as children, and we have been striving to share as many of them with our son as possible. Books are a passion in this household, so I guess the question is kind of moot. We all read. A LOT!

3. Have you re-read any of those childhood stories and been surprised by anything? I have re-read my favorites so many times that I'm not surprised by much of anything. But on the other hand, what does throw me through a loop is when we come across a newer copy of a children’s book and it has been "sensitized" and made "politically correct." We have copies of many books that are from when Steve and I were kids, so they aren't changed much, but the new changed copies just don't get bought by us.

4. How old were you when you first learned to read? Kindergarten/first grade. Normal school age. Although I remember wishing I could read earlier.

5. Do you remember the first 'grown-up' book you read? How old were you? I was in the 6th grade and snuck "The Talisman" by Stephen King. My Mom caught me and from that point on until I was about 16, she attempted to censor my reading material. (Not that she succeeded much...)

What I did on my summer holiday...

This weekend was a lot of fun. We spent Friday through Sunday in Wautoma, Wisconsin with my Mom's family. The trip up was great, Jamie and I hit the road around 10:15 am and we got there sometime around 2pm. No complaining, whining or back-talk out of my kiddo's mouth. I have to say, I was pretty impressed all around by Jamie. He missed his early afternoon nap all three days, but did ok in the evenings regardless.

One thing that did kill me was the food. Food everywhere. Not necessarily the best food, but when your body is screaming for something before you pass out from low sugar, you eat what ever is on hand. Which was usually something that was super high in fat like chips and cheese, or something that should have been cooked longer and you don't want to risk food poisoning like potato salad with half raw bacon and half cooked hard boiled eggs on top that has been sitting on the counter for four hours. Eeeww!

I love my grandma dearly, but she is a terrible cook. You can starve surrounded by food up there. <laughs> I just think that if she wore her reading glasses things would improve drastically. Since she can't see the expiration date on the food, things are usually half moldy, and then half cooked in the dishes which makes all around bad dishes. Trips into town turn into chances to eat something...anything. Thank goodness for pre-packaged/prepared food. I think I lived on croissants with muenster cheese and blue berry pop-tarts most of the weekend.

I did make grilled veggie sandwiches for Grandma and I on Saturday for lunch, but they had bacon (which I cooked my self) on them. Only two strips each, so it wasn't all that bad. Grandma loved them, and so did I. My Mom and I try to take turns with Grandma to make food, and we bring a lot of food up as well, so things usually aren't all that bad, but this time we didn't bring much since Grandma said she had bought so much.

We did a lot of walking and swimming. It was really great to see my cousins and socialize with them. I usually don't have much a chance to do that, so it was nice. Jamie swam like a big kid in the lake with my cousin Amie, her son and my self a couple of times. He loved it so much. There are 5 great-grandchildren under the age of 8 now, so we did a lot of kiddie activities which was so much fun. It is kind of a trip doing things with my cousins and their kids. We all have kids, so it is really kind of laid back and "anything goes" rules the day.

Anyhow, I'm glad to be home. Jamie has his three year old check-up today, and I have to run and get his immunization records from our old doctors office. Take care and happy summer!

Fourth of July. Is it just me or did June just blast by with out so much as a fare-thee-well? It seems like summer is half over, and Jamie has been in his kiddie pool two times. TWO TIMES ONLY! I guess I shouldn't complain, it is actually comfortable to be outside, or be inside with the windows open. We've been spending lots of time outside getting things done and playing with Jamie who loves to ride his tricycle.

I got one more wall primed and one coat of color on it. Man, I tell you, painting is hard work. I guess it is hard for me since I spent most of the time on a ladder trying my best to get good coverage without falling off. We need one of those miracle paint roller system. I tried to get my Dad to spring for one as part of my birthday paint accessories, but he pooh-pooh'ed the idea and said that they are a bitch to clean and don't work as well. So, I am doing the correct way and sweating my buns off at the same time. I’m pretty motivated, but today, I don't think I am going to put the second coat on until nap time for Mr. Jamie. This is the third day of painting and it is getting a little old. Did I say that? Since I have 4 more walls to go, I really gotta get cracking. I don't want this to be a summer long ongoing project. I want it done by the latest the end of next week. Not too bad since I am doing it myself.

So we are planning to going to see my Grandmother over the weekend. It is kind of a family get together as well, since my Mom's whole side is going up. My Aunt Lynn and Uncle Randy demo-ed their falling down trailer (50+ years old) last fall and had a very cute Wick Home type pre-fab put up. It is very cool and has three bedrooms, so there is plenty of room for everyone between the two houses. Aunt Lynn's has two bath/shower combos so I may go sometime during the weekend and sit in her huge whirlpool tub thingie and calgon my worries away. <laughs> That is if I can get my Mom out of it. She is a spa/whirlpool junkie. I’ll have to bring my awesome bath salts from the spa party I had in April. They are so divine smelling. My Mom is going to love them.

Anyhow, my grandma is so very excited that everyone is coming up. It sounds like the only ones staying at her house is my parents, and Steve, Jamie and I. Good deal if you ask me. I look forward to just taking it easy and getting some swimming in. I spoke to my Mom and she is bringing up some Bocca burgers and I am getting turkey brats and some veggies (eggplant, zucchini, red peppers and portabella mushrooms) to grill instead of the mega high fat hamburgers and stuff. It sould be interesting to say the least! :-) I'll be taking lots and lots of pictures, so hopefully one of these days I will upgrade my blogger account and get picture capabilities.

Whew! What a weekend!

On Saturday, Jamie and I spent the day with my parents choosing paint and painting supplies for my living room/dining room. I am more than likely going to be doing this project solo since Steve tends to not get involved with these types of projects. (Jeesh) but I am more than happy to do it myself. I am pretty motivated this last couple of days so Saturday night I washed two of the walls and then yesterday primed one and put a color coat on the other. (One had been painted last year and just got washed, and the other had been behind panneling and had original paint from 1955 on it which had to be primed.) I put a second coat of color paint on the one wall before I went to bed last night, so things are just pumping along.

HOWEVER, I found a giant upside down A scribbled on the wall that had its two coats of color this morning. While I was checking my e-mail, Jamie decided he needed to add his own touch. After my initial shock, our conversation went as follows. He proceded to tell me "A scribble happend on your wall Mommy, from when I was a little boy a long time ago." So he sat in his room while I re-painted his scribbles and thought about fibs and coloring on walls, and also primed the other wall.

Otherwise, things are going well around here. I have been having a hard time staying OP. I think that staying OP will continue to be a struggle for me all the time period. Ugh. I hope that things get a little better. I haven't been to Weight Watchers since June 10, so hopefully the damage hasn't been all that bad. I have been doing massive dammage control this past week, so hopefully things won't be too bad. I am just not looking forward to it. <sigh>

FRIDAY FIVE

1. Is your hair naturally curly, wavy, or straight? Long or short? Naturally curly and cut just below my shoulders. Pretty short for me.

2. How has your hair changed over your lifetime? I've always had the curl, even more so when I was a child/toddler. My Mom always tells the tale about how she couldn't get a comb through my hair when my hair finally came in. My hair was also jet black when I was a child, but now has lightened to a very dark brown with reddish highlights.

3. How do your normally wear your hair? I've been in the habit of doing a pony tail since I don't like the feeling of hair in my eyes/face, but since I got it cut this short, I try to wear it down as much as possible. Obviously, during the summer months, with the hot and humid weather we get here in WI, I keep it up as much as possible.

4. If you could change your hair this minute, what would it look like? I really don't think I would change anything. Perhaps a bit more curl, but other than that, I am pretty satisfied with my hair. I've only had highlights put in my hair once, and that was enough. It wasn't the best highlight job, and the color was not what I picked out. It just didn't look all that natural to me.

5. Ever had a hair disaster? What happened? My Mom allowed me to get a perm when I was in freshman year of high school. It looked good until I got to wash it for the first time and I developed an afro for the rest of the school year. My parents didn't encourage much make-up or hair styling, so I didn't know what to do with it besides just brushing it out. So, that coupled with my natural curl, just pouffed out for 6 months. It was a pretty rough semester.

Another kind of hair disaster, was when I was a senior in high school, I was attempting to curl my bangs before school and I burned my forehead with the curling iron. I had a scab the shape of the curling iron about three inches across my forehead, an inch above my eyebrows. Pretty embarrassing and very painfull

OMG...I can't believe it has been three weeks since I have updated. I actually have an excuse. I really do.

The hard drive on Steve's computer crashed, and I lost everything including the web site. We were attempting to use my computer to dial up and connect to the interent, but my computer is strictly a game computer and not at all suitable for interent. It was impossible to access even my e-mail with out it taking 20 minutes to compose and send a simple message. Not at all acceptable. <laughs> Steve got the hard drive going again and over the weekend, we have finally been able to use it. I can't tell you how happy both Steve and I were. Happy dance galore. This is the first I've even had a chance to sit down and even think about updating. Ugh!

We have also been so very busy with birthdays and other holiday's around here. My Mom's birthday is on May 24, my Dad's birthday is on June 2, my birthday is on June 8, and Father's day was yesterday. Throw into that mix, our 5 year wedding anniversary was last Friday June 13th, a baby shower for our close friends' baby yesterday, and all day seminar on how to do make-overs and a trip to the zoo. Unbelievably busy. Insanely busy.

As far as WW'ers go, I lost 1.2 lbs two weeks ago, and 0.4 lb last week. It has been pretty smooth sailing the last couple of weeks. Seeing two losses is really great for the morale around here. I had a bit of a rough week last week, but I still managed to lose so that obviously makes me happy and motivated. This past weekend, however was rough as all get out. So, I know what to expect, and I'm not to worked up about it.

Jamie got his first buzz hair cut yesterday. We have been keeping it a bit longer and it has gotten so long in the back that it looks like a mullet and that is just not right. So yesterday, when we were at my parent's house, my Dad asked me to give him a trim so I did with their new hair trimmer/buzzer and then Jamie got plunked in the chair against his will and he got all of his hair buzzed off. It was done with no tears as well, so it went rather smooth, especially with a promise of ice cream if he sat still with minimum of complaining. It is not a close cut, like Steve's military style, but his hair is and inch long. It really suits Jamie, since when he gets hot, he sweats unbelievable. Steve is the same way, so I guess it helps him to have a close cut. He does look like a completely different child, and he looks so grown up. I can barely believe that it is Jamie.

Anyhow, OP to everyone. Hopefully things will go better this week point wise for me. Wish me luck!

So weigh in went surprising well last night. I have to say that I did have some reservations about going. I was pretty stressed most of the day, and as you know by now, I am an emotional eater, so it was quite the struggle not to eat my self silly. I did indulge in half a McDonalds happy meal with Jamie yesterday. He can't finish one by himself anyway, so it is so much easier to split it with him and I save points too. I ended up losing 1.8 lbs at the weigh in. I was so surprised since I was completely convinced that I was going to see a gain again.

Since my friend Jessica and her co-worker were not able to make weigh in last night, I took Jamie with me so I wouldn't have to sit alone feeling bad for my self if I gained. (I would have a convenient excuse as to why I had to leave.) Jamie loves to go to Weight Watchers and weigh him self. DawnChristie, our fab leader, was not there either so Jamie was dissapointed, but was happy enough to weigh him self iwth the fill in leader.

I made a delicious lasanga that was pretty great points wise. It is an asparagus, mushroom and sausage lasanga with a garlicy cheese sauce. It came out to about 5 points per piece. I will post the recipe on the main site later on today. You can feel the love with this recipe. Steve was pretty impressed, and my Mom is ready to kill for a piece. She has acid reflux and can't eat tomatoes so this recipe is right up her alley.

Anyhow, "Happy OP" to everyone, and keep on losing!

Progress Prompts Now that summer has started (at least in some areas), what are your thoughts and feelings about wearing a bathing suit? Have you purchased it yet? If so, what does it look like? Where did you buy it? How did you feel when you bought it? Do you have a pool where you live and do you plan to use it regularly?

Well, it is finally spring here in Wisconsin and the weather is in the upper 60's lower 70's and just warm enough for shorts. I did buy a swim suit last year and wore it once. I wore it (of course) with a t-shirt over it, so technically I did wear it, but my bod was covered up.

I think this year, since I have lost approximately 32 lbs, I may still wear the suit from last summer since it is bound to fit me better than last year! I think I will make my self not wear a shirt in the pool either. It is a navy w/ white trim "tank-ini" that I got at Target. It technically a two piece suit, but they are not connected, and the top goes way down past where the waist band of the bottoms are, so it looks like a one piece. It's pretty comfortable and I like the cut of it. It is a 2X so it might really be too big. I'm going to have to try it on this week and see what's what.

My in-laws have a swimming pool and I have used it just about every summer so far. Steve isn't all that big on swimming, but I love to swim! It is really too bad that my in-laws live 45 minutes away, so they aren't close enough to pop over three times a week and get some exercise points. Now that Jamie is really big enough to want to go in the pool, I think I will use it more this next year. Last year the kiddie pool was set up in the pool area just next to the regular pool and Jamie spent his time throwing his pool toys into the big pool. I hope that we, as a family, can enjoy the pool much more this summer.

Milwaukee is situated right on Lake Michigan, and I would like to take advantage of that fact a few times during the summer. Last summer, Steve and I did take Jamie to the Lakefront/Bradford Beach, but the beach was all yucked up from some beach stinky muck and Jamie didn't care for it much. I hope this summer will be better.

I hope this summer I will feel much more comfortable with my weight and also I hope to start cracking down with the weight loss. I think I am more relaxed with my weight now, and I will enjoy the summer so much more.

Yesterday, Jamie and I took a ride up to see my Grandma. She lives 2.5 hours north west of Milwaukee. I haven't seen her since Easter and I thought it would be a nice ride. We stayed overnight since we got up there so late. We had so much fun and Jamie behaved VERY well. I was pretty proud of him. He was super great in the car as well, so it made things so much easier.

Since he is used to his little toddler bed, he and I slept in a downstairs bedrrom for easy access to the bathroom. I don't think I will ever sleep in the same bed with him! He slept glued to my side and tossed and turned all night long. If I got 4 hours of sleep I would be surprised. It is, however, very heart-melting when in the middle of the night, he burrows close and wispers half asleep "I love you Mommie." and falls back asleep.

This is the first time in my adult life that I have made the trek up-north without my Mom. We usually go together since it is easier to mind Jamie in pairs, and also since we both like to visit my Grandma. It was kind of strange being there without her. Jamie was completely convinced that Grandma would be by Great-Grandma's house when we got there. It isn't a terrible drive, and once you get in the car, it goes pretty fast. Thankfully Jamie slept most of the way up and most of the way home.

We usually visit once a month, but I just had this itch and felt like driving. It was a lot of fun, but still sad to be coming home. We still have tomorow as a holiday (Memorial Day) and will be visting by Steve's parents and my parents.

My parents got back late last night from a week long vacation. They road tripped to St. Louis (Missouri), Kansas City(Kansas/Missouri), Omaha (Nebraska) and the Amana Colonies ( in Illinois.) They had a great time, but missed Jamie terribly. I really missed them this trip too. Maybe it was because when we went on that same trip when I was in high school we had such a great time.

This week has been quite the week so far.

On Wednesday I had this Avon luncheon thing that was pretty ok nice, but the main reason for my mentioning it, was the fact that I wore a "pre-Jamie" dress to it. I had bought this dress in 1996 (I think) and haven't been able to wear it since at least before I had Jamie. It fit well too. Not too tight, and I didn't feel like a sausage. Wanna hear the kicker? It was size 16. Yes, you heard correctly, size 16. It is official. I'm in size 16. I recieved so many compliments, I felt like a queen. I also recently (about 2 months ago) got my hair cut off and now have shoulder length hair, in combination with the weight loss, NSV's are just rolling my way. It makes the whole struggle so worth it. I would like to at least be in a size 12 by the wedding.

Speaking of the wedding, the dresses came in. My cousin would like me to have the alterations finished by the end of July. I am going to see if the seamstress will do most of the alterations in July and then wait for the waist part until August. I kind of did a "Ok, sure, I'll have it done by the end of July" thing to placate her (my cousin), and I feel bad for doing that, but I really can't afford to pay to have it done twice.

A difference of 5-10 pounds lost would mean the difference of a well fitted dress and a dress hanging off of me. I'm going to wait the two weeks and then have ithe waist done. My Mom, my great aunt and also another friend of mine all use the same seamstress and I am going to see if she will do the alterations in two stages. I'm just not telling my cousin this, for all she will know, is that the alterations will be done by the end of July. Shhhhhhhhhh.

Anyhow, Friday Five time. Kind of dumb questions this week, and if they keep up like this, I will stop doig them. They are supposed to help you use your blog to it's fullest potential, so here goes.

1. What brand of toothpaste do you use? - I like Aim, and bonus, you can get it at the dollar store. Close Up is also pretty good, with a great cinnamon flavor.

2. What brand of toilet paper do you prefer? <laughs> Whatever kind is on sale. Charmin clogs our toilets, so we tend to use the cheap-o Scott Tissue kind.

3. What brand(s) of shoes do you wear? - What woman only wears one brand of shoes?

4. What brand of soda do you drink? - Diet Pepsi and Diet Vanilla Coke.

5. What brand of gum do you chew? - Whatever kind I manage to hide from my kid. He knows what gum is now and wants it all the time. I have to hide it. It wouldn't be so bad, but he eats it like candy and then swallows it. Blech.

Take care everyone! OP all the way!

So weigh in was pretty stinky. I gained 2.2 lbs. I looked over my weigh in chart with the leader and she and I both discovered that I gain every three weeks. Which also happens to co-incide with my period. This all started happening when I started this new birth controll about six months ago. (I swear, I really can't win.)

I know, too much information, but please, I am so tired of this gaining business! I did pretty well this last week too, and it doesn't piss me off, but I just wanted to sit down and cry over it. I am thinking of talking to my doctor about this. I even gain when I do pretty well. Doesn't that just suck.

Anyhow, tons of things to do today. I have a big Avon recognition luncheon this morning/afternoon and I have to walk to the grocery store to buy nylons. On a positive note, I tried on a pre-Jamie dress (size 16) and it fits well! I am going to wear it to proudly to the lucheon. I was doing the happy dance last night in my underwear after I tried on the dress on a whim. Yay!

Friday Five - Better late than never.
1. What drinking water do you prefer -- tap, bottle, purifier, etc.? Bottled when I remember to buy it. Otherwise we drink tap.

2. What are your favourite flavor of chips? I like those fancy bistro chips by frito-lay that are smoked cheddar w/ garlic, but I don't eat anymore. <sob> Fat Free Pringles all the way now-a-days.

3. Of all the things you can cook, what dish do you like the most? I like the Jambayla dish I make quite a bit. I made my Talpia with rice and zuchinni last night that was to die for. Oh yeah.

4. How do you have your eggs? Poached on toast. I did manage to lose 0.8 lbs. Nothing to sneeze at since I didn't expect a loss at all. I had a rough week eating wise, but I think I may have gotten my focus back.

I got wind of the fact that the bridesmaid's dresses are going to be coming in later on this month. Ugh. I am not any where close to where I need to be. All I can do is keep on plugging away. I hope that things start to get easier for me. I guess I just really need to keep my nose to the grind stone.

I hope to post some pictures this week. Some pictures were taken at a party recently and I hope to see them soon. Candid photos always look better than the posed ones. I have got to call my neighbor about them.

OP all the way!

While driving about town on Saturday, I happened behind a vehicle at a stop-light that had a very unusual bumper sticker. It was of the grade that you see in the vending machines at K-Mart that go for $.50 that read "Princess" or "Diva." You know, cheesy. Anyhow, this sticker read "Fat People Are Harder To Kidnap." I kind of didn't know how to react to that.

I wasn't offended as an overweight person, and I didn't see humor in it either. I think that I have a rather keen sense of humor and I felt nothing towards this sticker. Absolutely nothing. I did feel, somehow, that I should be outraged, but I couldn't even muster up some anger. The girl driving was a little on the heavier side, so what' up with the sticker? Stupidity reigns, methinks.

I've been asked to participate in a survey/panel discussion by the local liberal newspaper. They are looking to find out what people really want from The Milwaukee Journal. How cool is that? Both Steve and I feel that that newspaper is so liberal it is unreadable. Personally, human interest stories are fine and dandy, and people love them, but give me cold, hard, unbiased facts any day over some socialist minded columnist banging her drum about the youth gone bad and how it is the community's fault. Give me a big fat break. Anyhow, I have to call the lady back today and see when this shindig is happening.

This week has been hell on eating. I have barely managed to hold my own and I have been going on walks, so hopefully things will balance out. Steve, Jamie and I did take a nice long walk Friday night and ended up bumping into a couple that go to the same Weight Watchers meetings as Jessica and I do. We knew they lived in the same area as I did, but it was nice to see them out and about walking. They have quite the extensive walking route, and I hope to start doing walks like that with Jamie and Steve at least 2 or 3 nights a week. It was pleasant, and by no means power walking. Jamie's little legs can go only so fast. He likes pitching rocks in the river, so everyone is satisfied.

Happy late Mother's Day to all the Mommies and Mommies to be out there! That means you Simone!

Hi there folks! Welcome to the new home of Through the Looking Glass's journal/blog. I was offered to beta test a new blogger format thing, and I said "Oh yes!"

As you already can see, I completely revamped the main web site at http://karilookingglass.bravepages.com. Pretty cool, huh? I recently bought Microsoft FrontPage 98 on ebay for a song and dance. It is quite the publishing tool. I'm pretty excited about the whole thing. <grin>

Last week I did lose 1.2 pounds. I really struggled last week with getting back on track, but things worked out in the end. I'm not going to be attending weigh in tonight since we have NO $$ and I am going to be going over to my Aunt Mary's house tonight to do exercise night with her, my other Aunt and a friend of theirs. I'm pretty excited about working out with them.

Well, I hope to post more tonight after I figure out how to transfer my archives from the old blogger site. Wish me luck!
